Arizona hasn’t required a permit to carry a concealed handgun since 2010, and that trips up a lot of people who assume “permitless” means “the permit doesn’t matter.” If you’re 21 or older and can legally possess a firearm, you can carry one, openly or concealed, without ever applying for anything. Yet The Shooting Range still teaches a CCW class every week, and plenty of Arizona residents who don’t legally need a permit get one anyway.
The short answer is that constitutional carry and a concealed weapons permit solve two different problems, and most people who carry regularly end up wanting both.
What Constitutional Carry Covers
Constitutional carry means Arizona doesn’t stand between you and your handgun. No permit application, no fingerprinting, no waiting period, and no state-mandated training class before you carry. It applies to any adult 21 or older who isn’t a prohibited possessor under state or federal law.
That’s real freedom, and it’s also where the confusion starts. Constitutional carry covers carrying inside Arizona. It doesn’t touch what happens the moment you cross a state line, walk into a gun store to buy your next firearm, or get pulled over by an officer who has no quick way to confirm you’re legally allowed to be carrying. A CCW permit fills in exactly those gaps.
So Why Get the Permit
Reciprocity. An Arizona CCW is honored in more than half the country, so the permit that does nothing for you inside Arizona’s borders becomes the thing standing between legal and not legal the moment you drive to Texas, fly to Florida, or road-trip through a string of reciprocity states to visit family. Constitutional carry doesn’t travel. A permit does.
Faster purchases. A valid Arizona CCW can stand in for the federal background check at a licensed dealer, so you’re not stuck waiting on a NICS call to clear before you walk out with your new firearm.
A clean answer during a stop. If a deputy or officer runs your name and finds a valid concealed weapons permit on file, that’s an instant, unambiguous answer to the one thing they’re trying to confirm. Without it, you’re relying on the conversation going well.
Employer and travel requirements. Some employers and a handful of federally regulated properties still ask for the permit specifically, not just proof that Arizona law allows you to carry.
None of that makes constitutional carry pointless. It just means the two options solve different problems, and plenty of Arizona residents end up wanting what both of them offer.

Getting Your Arizona CCW at The Shooting Range
We teach two versions of the class, and which one you need comes down to whether you’ve already proven you can safely handle a handgun.
The 4-hour course is the full class: Arizona concealed carry law, use-of-force basics, restricted locations, and a 50-round range qualification with an instructor watching. Bring your own handgun (semi-auto preferred), 50 rounds of ammo, and a valid photo ID. Fingerprinting and paperwork are included, and you’ll leave with the Certificate of Completion AZDPS needs for your application. It’s open to Arizona residents and non-residents 21 and older, or 19 and older for active-duty military and veterans.
The 2.5-hour course skips the range time. It’s built for anyone renewing an expired Arizona CCW, transferring a permit from another state, or showing proof of firearms proficiency like a DD214. Same classroom content, no live fire required.
