How to Get an Arizona Concealed Carry Permit: A Step-by-Step Guide

Arizona is a constitutional carry state, meaning any adult 21 or older who can legally own a firearm may carry one, openly or concealed, without a permit. So why get an Arizona CCW at all? Two practical reasons: reciprocity when you travel to other states, and speed at the counter, since a valid permit lets a licensed dealer skip the NICS background check wait when you buy a firearm.

Step 1: Confirm You’re Eligible

You’ll need to be at least 21, legally allowed to possess a firearm, and able to safely handle a handgun. If you’re unsure whether something in your background could disqualify you, AZDPS is the authority to check with directly.

Step 2: Take the Required Training

Our Arizona CCW class meets the training requirement under A.R.S. 13-3112 in a single 4-hour session for $80. You’ll cover concealed carry law and use-of-force basics in the classroom, then demonstrate safe handgun handling on the range. You’ll leave with a Certificate of Completion to submit with your AZDPS application.

Step 3: Submit Your Application and Fingerprints to AZDPS

Arizona’s application fee is $60, and you’ll need to be fingerprinted as part of the process. AZDPS handles the application directly, so check their site for the current forms and submission options.

Step 4: Wait for Processing

AZDPS has up to 75 days to process a completed application. Most applicants hear back well before that, but it’s worth planning around the full window rather than a faster estimate.

Step 5: Carry With Confidence

Once approved, your Arizona CCW is valid for 5 years and honored in well over half the country through reciprocity agreements. Renewal follows the same basic process before it expires.

A Quick Note

This is general information, not legal advice, and permit fees, processing times, and reciprocity agreements can change. Confirm current details directly with AZDPS before you apply. Ready for the training step? See our Arizona CCW class on the Classes page.
